Students will explore writing in a variety of ways.  We will explore different types of formal writing including expository, narrative and persuasive essays.  We will write weekly in our journals with prompts that will promote creative and descriptive responses.  This is a fun way for us to get to know each other and a good tool for me to see which skills students need to work on. 

Third grade students begin to develop an awareness of cohesive writing using the following skills:

• Spelling

• Capitalization and punctuation

• Writing in complete sentences

• Writing paragraphs with focus including a main idea, specific details and elaboration

• Creating complete works including poetry, creative writing, expository, persuasive and narrative essays
